Waverunner sinking, and parts rusting; told by Yamaha its designed that way!

By Tom(Owner), May. 18, 2010

I had the EXACT same issue as the other reviewer. Hose clamps rusting. Called Yamaha, they said it is an "entry level" ski, and basically that is what I get. To change out the hose clamps you have to remove the entire engine!

Before I got around to trying to replace the hose clamps, ... went to take them out one day, and both started sinking at the dock. Water pouring in around the shaft. Yamaha dealer told me that the company is using the wrong sealant, and it is not waterproof. He said they are having problems with lots of that model. Told me to buy some waterproof sealant called "The Right Stuff". Sure wish Yamaha had thought about building them right in the first place!

DO NOT BUY these skis. They are junk.

2008 Yamaha VX Deluxe

By tom dandar(Owner), May. 10, 2010

I bought 2 in June 2008. I live in Florida and use my waverunners in salt water. I called Yamaha in May 2010 to complain that all of the hose clamps are rusted because they failed to use stainless steel clamps. I also complained that the engines are not painted and it is impossible to spray all a... reas with silicone or teflon because there is not enough room to get a can to the bottom of the engine. Yamaha said that this waverunner is an "entry level" waverunner and it would cost too much to use stainless steel hose clamps and paint the engine. In order to change the clamps, the engine has to be removed.
This weekend, both waverunners started sinking because water is coming in around the shaft. I guess it cost too much to use a good water tight seal, or Yamaha wants to keep their repairmen busy or wants these "entry level" units not to last too long. I bought Yamahas because I have a 1991 Waverunner III that never had these problems. They certainly do not make them like they used to. DO NOT BUY YAMAHAS, and look closely at what you buy.

Great Jet Ski

By Mike Begue(Owner), Aug. 13, 2011

I'm surprised at the other two reviews. I've owned my ski for a couple of years and had absolutely no problem. I have friends with Seadoos and they are always in the shop! Great ski in my opinion. Read Full Review

Great Ski

By Rene(Owner), May. 24, 2016

No problems with mine, ever! Keep in mind I only use them in fresh water, garaged, and only have about 85 hours on it (2008). Treated them pretty gentle, but I will look into the hose clamps now that you mention it. Read Full Review

Yamaha FX VX

By Gerhard(Owner), Apr. 4, 2017

Have 2 VX and 2 FX 2008, all done more then 400hrs. all in salt water. Yes hose clamps are rusty and I replaced all 42 on one ski. So what. Best ski ever. No problems with all these hrs. and years. Even motor was full of salt water on one 6 years ago, still as good as all the others, no difference ... in speed or performance. I had one FX 2006 blow up after 700 something hrs., a valve broke and made a whole in the piston. Got 10 Yamaha in my operation in Auckland NZ, and in my opinion you be a fool to buy anything else.
